International Chinese Costume Festival Promotes the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Culture

International Chinese Costume Festival, a local festival organized by FUZI Chamber aims at promoting and spreading the beauty of Chinese traditional costume in the modern society. On 6th April and 7th April this year, participants gathered at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Plaza in Tsim Sha Tsui, joining this exotic carnival.

FUZI Chamber hopes to alter locals’ thinking on Chinese traditional costumes, not only for formal occasion but also for casual wear. “ Traditional costumes in other Asian countries like Japan and Korea are common for their locals, but why not the same in Hong Kong? We hope to establish a deeper concept of Chinese tradition in Hong Kong.” said Mr. Chan, the chairman of FUZI Chamber.

“I enjoy the customs try-on experiences as this allows me to know more about the history. I really appreciate the details on these costumes which make them attractive and beautiful.” said Tina, a 12 year-old girl who joined the festival with her family for the first time.

Rainie Lam, one of the organizers of Hanfu Hong Kong, said this is her second time joining this festival. She joined this organisation since 2014. She found this festival is meaning for some younger generation, especially Han people to know their culture, to knw their traditional clothing. When we asked about the successfulness of Hanfu Hong Kong, she said "Never success, everything is in progress."

She added, "I remembered a scene that it is impressive for me. 56 nationalities of China form a circle, everyone was wearing their own traditional clothing, but Han did not have their own clothing. They just wear a T-shirt and trousers." She said that she wants to give a helping hand to promote Hanfu culture to Chinese. Sometimes, she is upset when people staring at her strange when she is wearing Hanfu in Hong Kong. She wants people can accept their own culture.

Hanfu is a precious culture in Chinese tradition. However, modern people seems to have insufficient awareness towards this culture. China is having more than 2000 years of history and there are much to be learnt and studied. By understand different details on the costume, we are able to learn more about the daily life styles and practise of people in the old times. Thus, we could learn from the daily wisdom to lead a smarter and more convenient life.

This is also an unforgettable experience of  the participants as this is rare for organisation to have big-scale event on Chinese culture. The beauty of Chinese traditional costume should be appreciated and this is a valuable chance for us to take the initiative to know more.
